REVIEW by TIM DARNELL
www.timdarnellmusic.com

This, at both times astonishing and pleasurable, Jeff McMullen album, Square One, exhibits layers of texture and intensity, but I caution the listeners: beware of raw emotional truths crying out unexpected melancholic, life-experience, sensitivity and poetic, "hey that's me" lyrics, dynamic musical chordal and melodic sensitivity, and all the while elucidated by a distinctive, almost other-worldly voice.

These eye-popping McMullen written tunes include mesmerizing, unique arrangements, authoritative keyboard twistings, wistful stringed instruments, and supportive, non-intrusive, but “I feel ya” drumming patterns.

Put these unexpected aspects together and audibly mix these profound components with an impeccable ear for what's exactly right, we (you and I) are treated to “Square One.”

I have to, come on, I gladly profess that to my good fortune, Jeff McMullen is a personal friend, but beyond that, an undeniable earthly and heavenly treasure - a true musical force that anyone with a love for life should immediately get to know.

Years ago, when unexpectedly hearing him singing and riffing on a guitar backstage at one of my performances, I was astonished to hear, what I perceived to be, a baritone Rod Stewart, but then factored in the unheralded pain factor - a tipping point for my sensitivities immediately which placed him in the category of musical greatness – the yet to be discovered, savant of our modern day music scene.

Jeff is humble, and (he would deny this) a unique, one of a kind talent who is leaving a mark not only on the music world, but God's world at large - and me.
